Equipment Needed for the Bikini Body Guide (BBG)

Update: 3/18/20 Due to the quarantines, Kayla updated BBG to require less equipment. You can literally do the entire program with a kitchen chair and milk jugs if need be. Read more about that from her here.

I still think you would benefit from buying some pieces of equipment, nonetheless. The essential ones I recommend are listed at the end of this post.

Update: 3/15/20 With the world experiencing the Corona-virus Pandemic, now is a perfect to try BBG from the safety of your own home. Women all over the world are coming together to workout together virtually. If you can’t afford to buy any additional equipment, check out this post.

I purchased Kayla Itsine’s Bikini Body Guide (BBG) because I could save money on a gym membership and because I read it could be done without equipment. A few weeks in, I realized that while BBG says it is an at home workout program, it does require some additional equipment.

If you are tight on money, I understand. You can still do BBG at home without buying any additional equipment.

However, if you want to know exactly what equipment will be used during the 12 weeks of BBG 1.0, below is a list of all the equipment (in order of their appearance) that you will need to have in your home gym.

Equipment Needed for BBG 1.0

Yoga mat

Most women have one, but if not, you need one. This is the only thing I suggest you buy. You don’t need the most expensive one. Here is a well rated one from Amazon. Any of them will work as long as it will lay flat and has some cushion.

Bench Press (2)

It eventually has moves where you jump between two bench presses. I would only get one and then invest in these jump boxes for the moves that require two benches.

Dumbbells

The app suggests 6-33 lbs. I have two tens and a set of fives

Medicine Ball

The app suggests one that weighs 13-26 lbs

Jump Rope

I have done BBG/PWR for years with no jump rope. You simply jump in place and pretend. It might look stupid, but it works. Recently I bought a jump rope and used it. If you have the space, it is so much more fun. Plus, I definitely jump higher with it.

Aerobic step

I spent forever agonizing over a step, but ultimately I wanted a quality step that would have a bunch of different heights. I tried this one at my old gym and loved it. It appears that Kayla might use this same one. I almost bought a 30 dollar step at Academy Sport, but it was junk. If you are going to spend money, get what will last.

Or you can get your bench and step combined in this awesome contraption. (This is what I would do if I were doing it over.)

Kettlebell

I would have two different weights: 20 lbs and 30 lbs. Here is the one I would buy. The reviews say that the metal can be sharp, but I have these gloves (These are great for rough handles on the weights and extra wrist support, in case you find your wrists hurt after all the push-ups you do)

Bosu

This helps engage the core during push-ups. It’s only used a few times. I don’t own one, and it might not even be part of the revised home-friendly BBG.

In Summary

If you want only a few essential pieces then get a yoga mat, dumbbells, and an aerobic step (or this is you have the money!) While it’s nice to have access to every piece of equipment she uses, it definitely isn’t necessary. I started the program with only a yoga mat, some hand weights, and my imagination. After a month I was already losing inches and showing some definition.

Don’t let the lack of access to every perfect piece of equipment deter you from starting BBG by Kayla Itsines today. Starting it one year ago was the best decision I ever made for my health and it might just be for you too! Good luck!
