Did you ever see the Super Size Me documentary by Morgan Spurlock?  He’s the guy who ate only McDonald’s for 20 days, and gained 24 pounds because of it. Even if you’ve never watched it, I’m sure you remember hearing about it. Now there’s a sequel documentary called,  Super Size Me 2: Holy Chicken.

In this film, Spurlock opens a fast food restaurant that sells only chicken sandwiches. From raising his own chickens to serving the sandwiches he made after slaughtering them, Spurlock was involved in every step of the process. Bear with me here, I promise this has everything to do with Crowd Cow.

In watching the Super Size Me 2 documentary, I discovered the absolute horrors of the chicken industry. From falsifying labels (FYI free range means nothing, stop paying for it) to the flat-out bullying of farmers, the whole industry is jacked.

The most disturbing image was of chickens who had been genetically engineered to grow so fast that they literally outgrew their feathers. Most of them couldn’t even walk, and several of them died from heart attacks.

It dawned on me that THIS was the kind of food I was feeding my own children, and I was not okay with it. I began my search for better, more naturally and ethically sourced meat.

The Search For Better Meat

However, I quickly found out that it’s hard to find properly raised meat when you live in a small town. None of the major, “fancy” super market chains like Whole Foods or Trader Joe’s have stores near where I live.

And though I know plenty of farmers, they don’t have the kind of meat I want. They only sell whole chickens, and their birds aren’t 100% pasture raised. Even if they were pasture raised, I don’t want whole birds! I’m on a weight loss and fitness journey, and I eat a lot of boneless, skinless breasts and thighs.

At first I went with ButcherBox for my needs. But I was underwhelmed once I actually ordered through them. I didn’t like the ButcherBox pricing structure, the quality of the meat was inconsistent, and it tasted no different from the regularly sourced stuff I could get cheaper at the grocery store. Between that, the limited selection of cuts, ButcherBox wasn’t worth the cost in my opinion. I quickly cancelled my subscription.

I was just about to give up my quest for 100% pasture-raised birds, and better sourced meat in general. But then my friend told me to check out Crowd Cow. I am so glad I did! Crowd Cow is exactly what I was looking for.  I started buying meat through them 6 months ago and haven’t looked back!

The great part is Crowd Cow is more than just chicken and beef!  They sell all kinds and cuts of meat, basically any kind you can imagine. Allow me to explain why Crowd Cow is the best, ethically and naturally sourced meat provider out there. And why you will think so, too!

Huge Meat Selection

Crowd Cow offers just about any cut of just about any variety of meat you could imagine

Through Crowd Cow you can enjoy a wide selection of quality meats ! For example, get yourself some Japanese or American Wagyu, and pick how you want it from steaks to hot dogs! The choices are incredible, and seemingly endless!

They also sell off-beat meats like duck, bison, lamb, and game.

Crowd Cow even carries a huge selection of seafood. Their shrimp is caught fresh in the gulf and frozen on the boat. They offer lobster, scallops, and many species of fish I’ve never even heard of

Crowd Cow is your one stop shop for any meat you could ever imagine. The selection is impressive

Not Just Meat

Crowd Cow also sells sides, desserts, broth cups, seasonings, whole meals, and even dog treats! You can check out everything they offer here. It all looks delicious, besides the dog treats, of course.

Being on a weight loss journey, I’ve decided to stick to meat, for the time being. But, eventually I’d love to try the rest of their extensive product line!

High Quality Meat

Crowd Cow’s meat is so good. It was love at first bite, and I am hooked. This is the reason I keep ordering with them, their product actually delivers with quality and taste.

The chicken breasts from Crowd Cow are ridiculously tender and juicy. I actually rave about them to the point of annoyance. Seriously, one of my friends recently said to me, “I’m so sick of hearing about that juicy chicken.” I can’t stop working it into every conversation. It’s that good!

I’ve found the meat tastes fresh for days after being cooked. Prior to Crowd Cow, I never meal prepped. The chicken always tasted “off” after being rewarmed, so I was forced to cook chicken in small batches and eat it fresh, right away. Since, rewarmed chicken tasted bad, I never wanted to bulk cook it or have leftovers laying around.

Crowd Cow changed all that. With their pasture-raised birds, this is a non-issue!  My prepped chicken tastes great for days, even after reheating, and now I am a meal prep machine! It has really helped me see progress along my weight-loss journey.

A Note About the Cost

Quality meat comes at a cost, however, it’s not as expensive as you might think. Crowd Cow prices are on par with Whole Foods prices. You know the expression, “You get what you pay for!” It is 100% true when it comes to meat.

The meat from Crowd Cow is high quality, and you can 100% taste the difference. Crowd Cow meat is different and, hands down, the best meat I’ve ever had. It’s worth the extra cost.

Now, I am not made of money. I live within a budget so tight it’s hard to breathe, yet I have managed to afford Crowd Cow. I simply set a monthly budget for meat and stick to it.

This month I am ordering 1 pound of breakfast sausage, 2.5 pounds of chicken breasts, 2 pounds of ground beef, and 11 pounds of boneless skinless chicken thighs. Seventeen-and-a-half pounds of meat in a month is plenty for our family of 5, and I couldn’t be more thrilled with how we’re able to fit it into our monthly food budget.

Better For You Meat

Pasture-Raised chicken

It’s quite the process to pasture raise chickens, as they are transported from field to field in coops on trailers. The result of all this effort, you ask? A far superior product.

Pasture-raised chicken provides more health benefits than chicken raised under traditional (read: abhorrent) chicken industry methods. Pasture-raised chicken meat tends to be higher in iron, higher in Omega 3, have a lower Omega 6:3 ratio, and be higher in antioxidants (Vitamin E, for example).

Grass-Fed Beef

Grass-fed and finished beef is packed full of nutrients. Generally, grass fed beef is considered to be a healthier option than grain-fed beef. Pound for pound, it has less total fat, and therefore less calories. The nutritional content of that fat is also different. For example, grass fed beef has as much as five times the amount of omega-3 fatty acids as regular grain fed beef.”

In case you are rolling your eyes and thinking, “Enough with the Omega 3’s already, here’s why you should be eating them, and here’s why the ratio of Omega 6 to 3 is important.

Heritage Pork

Beyond the beef and chicken, heritage pork is also available from Crowd Cow. Perhaps the term “heritage pork” is new to you, and that’s okay. Here’s why heritage pork should be in your vocabulary, and in your tummy:

Factory-farmed pigs have been bred to produce very lean meat—so lean that it can be dry and bland when cooked. Heritage breeds often have more fat, which makes the meat flavorful and moist. Plus, many heritage pigs aren’t raised in confinement, which means happier, healthier animals and less environmental contamination.

Even if you decide the pasture-raised chicken, grass-fed beef, and heritage pork isn’t for you, you’ll still definitely want to check out the plentiful variety of other Crowd Cow options. I guarantee they are healthier than the meats you find at your local grocery store.

If you do pass on the premium meats, like the pasture-raised chicken, grass-fed beef, and heritage pork, and just get the organic options – your cost will undoubtedly be comparable to what you pay at the grocery store. But the quality and taste will still be unbeatable!

Convenience

This might sound counterintuitive, seeing as you might think picking up what you need when you need it at the grocery store is convenient. But I really like knowing what meat I have to build my menu around in advance. This is convenient when it comes to both budgeting and menu planning for the month ahead.

Not to mention, I now routinely buy leaner cuts of meat without being tempted to buy whatever percentage ground beef or cut of meat is on sale at the supermarket. Thus saving my healthy monthly menu from switching to burgers and fries, or steak and potatoes, in the heat of the moment. Crowd Cow helps me conviently stick to the plan and my diet.

Finally, it doesn’t get much easier than buying your meat online and having it delivered to your door. Talk about time saving! It’s the hassle free way to get meat, and I am never going back.

An added bonus for people like me? You do not have to touch bloody, oozy, leaky raw meat packages, then continue shopping. Am I the only one that is thoroughly grossed out by this? I don’t like raw meat packages to come in contact with the rest of my grocery purchases, or be bagged with them, either. Ordering meat from Crowd Cow eliminates all these issues.

Great for Weight Loss

Not only is sticking with my menu helpful for my weight loss, it can also help specific diets. If you are on a Whole 30 diet or Keto, Crowd Cow is a great place to source your meat. They even sell broth cups and other items you might find helpful. I especially like that their bacon has zero sugar in it.

Plus, like I said above, the premium meats are lower in fat and calories. Every little bit counts when you’re on a weight loss journey. Some of Crowd Cow’s meats do not have nutrition facts on them, which is unfortunate when you count calories like I do. However, estimating with generic and USDA numbers works. Even without the nutritional information, Crowd Cow is the only way to go, in my opinion.

How Crowd Cow Works

Crowd Cow is basically a monthly subscription, but without a monthly fee. Once becoming a member, (there is no joiner fee, by the way) you will be sent a box of meat each month. You can receive the exact same meats every month, or you can customize your order each month, for no extra charge, depending on your needs.

Crowd Cow is amazing at reminding you about your upcoming shipment via multiple emails and texts. I’ve never once forgotten to look over, modify, and confirm my order, and I’m a very forgetful person. The reminders help me get exactly what I need each month, thus keeping the value and usefulness of my subscription high.

Shipping is free with an order of $99 or more when you are a member and there is a 5% discount on the box. Spending a hundred bucks on meat in a month is easy peasy, and probably something you do already.

Don’t need $99 of meat this month? No problem! Crowd Cow allows you to skip a month without penalty. There’s no monthly fee required for Crowd Cow membership. You also have the option to change the frequency of your Crowd Cow deliveries to as often as every 2 weeks, to as seldom as every 2 months.

The meat is shipped to you frozen and packed in dry ice. It is always still rock solid by the time I go to unpack it. I have zero concern about the quality or freshness of meat sent to me!

That’s how it works. It’s simple. It truly doesn’t get any easier than picking out your meat, while laying on the couch in the comfort of your own home, and unpacking it once it arrives on your doorstep.
