New Year’s Resolutions

It’s a new year, and I can’t help but love a fresh start! Just like a majority of Americans, at the beginning of January, I sit down and make a list of what I want to accomplish by the end of the year. Topping the list every year for the last decade has been “Lose weight and get in shape.” About 21 months ago, I started BBG…and I never quit. I’m working out consistently, and I am proud that I can finally check the “get in shape” goal off of my 2019 resolutions.

That feels amazing, but what doesn’t feel great is that I still have about 20-30 pounds to lose even though I exercise consistently (you can’t outrun a bad diet). That’s why one of my New Year’s resolutions for 2020 is to get the same consistency and discipline with my diet that I’ve had with my physical fitness.

Where I started last year

Eating healthy is by far the hardest part of weight loss for me. Sadly, it’s also a key to weight loss. Last year, I spent a majority of the year on Weight Watchers focusing on a Whole Food Plant Based Diet. I lost 18 pounds thanks to combining the knowledge I gained from this book with the WW program

However, after a month or two on WW, my weight loss stalled. See, the problem I have always faced while following this program is that my weight loss is not consistent. I will lose 10 pounds, maintain for months, then lose 5 more. While WW has helped me lose 54 lbs and keep it off, it took me 3.5 years to lose that weight, and I have been unable to progress past the 160 pounds point.

The inconsistency isn’t because the program doesn’t work, because it does if you follow it. I have just come to realize that WW isn’t a good fit for my personality in the long run; I get sick of following it. When I get tired of WW, I drift over to MyFitnessPal and start counting calories to give me a break. Except that counting calories alone has never worked for me: I have never lost weight when using MyFitnessPal. I can never stay with it.

Why Noom?

I have deep seeded mental hurdles from years and years of poor eating choices, bad habits that I MUST break. Following Weight Watchers or simply counting calories is not going to help me make the types of permanent changes I want to make. The things is, I don’t want to lose weight just to be skinny. The goal for me is to be healthy, have self control with my diet, and most importantly teach my kids to master their food rather than letting their food be their master. I needed a program that would help retrain my brain, give me support, and a place to track my food. Noom checks all of these boxes.

When I did the week trial with Noom, I learned that they don’t just focus on tracking food intake; they focus on the mind, too. If there is one thing I learned from Brain Powered Weight Loss, it’s that the mind is the first beast we have to tame when it comes to a healthier lifestyle. Noom is helping me tame my brain with their daily, short lessons about weight loss. With Noom, I get education, support, and tools that help me understand the mental components to diet.

After completing the trial and after lots of thought, I decided to take the leap from WW to Noom as my weight loss strategy for 2020. This year I feel confident that I will finally reach my weight loss goals thanks to Noom.

Conclusion

I am approaching my weight loss the year by conquering my mental hurdles through the help Noom is giving me. This is an approach I would have never believed in until I discovered Brain Powered Weight Loss halfway through last year. Once I saw how powerful the mind was in achieving weight loss goals, I knew that Noom was going to be the perfect fit for me. This is going to be the year that I check the “get discipline with my diet” box off my resolutions list.

That’s it. My goal for 2020 is to eat health food consistently and get these last 20-30 pounds off. It feels weird to actually have committed to Noom after all these years with WW, so I’m excited to see it all shake out. I will keep you updated on the journey. After a few months on Noom I will give you a detailed review of how it worked out for me and how it compares to WW.

Now that I’ve shared my goals, let me know what your goals are. Beyond that I’d love to hear your plan as to how to achieve those goals. If you want to lose weight, check out Noom for their week trial to see if it is a fit for you! Let me know below in the comments!

Happy New Year…or should I say Happy Noom Year?
