5 Tips to Finally Lose Weight

I know what it is like to want to lose weight, and not lose it. Here we are, sitting at the near end of 2022…have you reached the weight loss goals you set for yourself when 2022 began? Considering only about 8% of folks make good on their New Year’s Resolution, chances are…probably not. How many years running has this been your story? Too many to count?

I know how you feel! I’ve been there. Before reaching my weight loss goals, I rang in many new years in the exact same place as the previous one. It was devastating. I have finally made it to the other side, and I’m so grateful to be ringing in 2023 in a much healthier place, mentally and physically.

5 tips to lose weight

I’ve learned a thing or two about how to successfully lose weight and keep it off over the course of my painstaking, up-and-down, years-long weight loss journey. The tips I’m about to give you, are tips I created from years of experience.

*Before We Go Any Further, Let Me Explain Something.

Nothing is more confusing than the weight loss world. There is a mind-blowing amount of conflicting information out there, when it is actually quite simple. The “secret” to weight loss is nothing more than consistently being in a calorie deficit. How you achieve that deficit is completely up to you, and the options are endless.

Take it from me, someone who has tried and failed a lot of diets, that the least miserable way to create a sustainable calorie deficit is by incorporating the foods you love into your diet. But how do you manage that and successfully lose weight? By creating a plan, and becoming the author of your own diet.

Would you believe me if I said you can lose weight, right now, and enjoy the process?

My goal is simple: I want to help you create a weight loss system that is completely personalized. Let me take the confusion of weight loss out of the equation, and set you on a consistent path to weight loss success.  But not just any path, not mine or anyone else’s, your own path.

The one you create will be unique to you, and that’s why it works. Let’s get you started today.  Don’t wait until after the holidays, or for the New Year. Start changing your life now. Sign up for my FREE weight loss course and find out just how much you’re capable of.

Now, onto what you are here for…

The top 5 tips I have learned that will help you to finally lose weight in 2023:

1. Find a weight loss method that is sustainable and works for you.

Usually, when selecting a weight loss program, people approach it with a “monkey see, monkey do” attitude. They see someone who has lost weight, either in real life or on the internet, and attempt to do what that person did in order to lose weight themselves. Makes sense, right? Wrong!

Everyone, including yourself, is unique. You don’t know why or how their weight loss methods happen to work for them, and their tastes, life, and nutritional needs may vary wildly from your own. They are not you, and what is right for them, may not be right for you.

When you force yourself down someone else’s path, it often times leads to failure.

For instance, my friend’s mom recently lost a ton of weight doing Keto, and kept it off. In the past, this would have tempted me to jump on the keto bandwagon. Because since she had success, naturally, I would have success, too. That’s simply not true. I love carbs! Bread and I have a special connection, and there is nothing quite as comforting to me as a couple scoops of ice cream.

If I ever went keto I’d constantly be fighting my natural drive towards all things carbs. Even if I managed to pull that lifestyle off for a couple weeks and lose a bunch of weight, there’s now way I could I keep it up.

It wouldn’t be sustainable for me to cut out so much of the food I love and enjoy, forever, in the name of weight loss. I would be miserable. Then I’d quit  and gain back the weight I lost once I was reunited with my long lost true love: carbs.

Save yourself the time, misery, and disappointment. Don’t lose weight the way THEY’RE doing it if it means you also have to lose yourself. Instead, identify how you like to eat first, then find a program in which your preferred eating habits are naturally supported.

2. Prioritize Weight Loss

I’ve lost a lot of weight in my life. Seriously, A LOT. From my teenage years to now, with many pregnancies sprinkled in, I’ve lost a lot of weight. Though each situation and season of life was different, every time I lost weight there was one crucial, common factor. I made weight loss my priority.

I never approached the day without weight loss goals on my mind. I formulated a plan, was intentional with my meals, and pushed myself past my excuses. I was uncompromising, day after day after day. My weight loss goals never got pushed to the back burner. They were always the main event, and at the top of my mind.

I was FOCUSED.

Even if the days were hard and spiraling out of control, I would show up. Because that is what you have to do in order to reach your weight loss goals. Show up. When weight loss becomes a priority, everything shifts to support that goal.

There will be sacrifices in other areas of your life when you prioritize your weight loss efforts. Currently, I give up a large chunk of my weekend to meal prep my food for the week. I also lose a portion of downtime away from my kids by going to bed earlier. I do this so I can wake up early to exercise before the demands of the day kick in.

When my friends order fancy cocktails, I opt for water. Some sacrifices are big, others are small. Every little decision adds up. When you prioritize weight loss, you start making  decisions based on whether or not it supports your weight loss goals. If something doesn’t support your priorities, tailor your decision and actions accordingly.

It’s time to get serious. If you aren’t treating weight loss as a priority, don’t be surprised when, in six months from now, you still haven’t achieved your goals. Make it a priority, and in 6 months time, you will be glad, and proud, that you did. Your dedicated effort will reward you.

3. Identify and Manage Your Stress

Stress is my number one weight loss obstacle. When I am immensely stressed, I have a tendency to take my weight loss efforts – even if they are a priority and chuck them out the window! I don’t have time or energy for it when I am in survival mode, and neither do you!

Through countless ups and downs, I’ve discovered that self-awareness is the key to weight loss success when dealing with stress. Stressful situations and events have a tendency to repeat themselves.

I didn’t realize just how much life happens in patterns until I started keeping track of my schedule, habits, and goals in this planner. Now I am aware of the things that stress me out the most, I plan around it, and cope with it in healthier ways

Through logging and reflecting on my days in my planner, I’ve come to realize that I experience a heightened level of stress in the middle of the afternoon, every single day. There is a lot to do around the house, and by that point in the day, my energy, morale, and motivation is low.

I used to end up eating my feelings to deal with the overwhelm and exhaustion.

Once I recognized this pattern, I started to anticipate it. I made a list of all the things that could help me relax and keep me out of the stress snacks: a walk outside, a cup of coffee on the couch with my favorite music, a 15 minute power nap, etc.

The list of stress-relieving activities to choose from is quite extensive, so now when I feel stress starting to creep up, I stop and choose to do something from my list. This has saved me from downing literally thousands of unnecessary calories! It’s so easy to allow stress to foil weight loss plans.

You must recognize the stressful situations in your life, and come up with a way to counter them. This is crucial if you want to have lasting success on your weight loss journey.

4. Change Your Habits

The motivation you feel at the beginning of your weight loss journey will eventually fade. It will not be there to keep you going when the days are hard and long. That’s when your daily habits step up and carry you through.

When you’re first starting out on your weight loss journey, you will be eager to change everything all at once. You might want to up your protein, cut out all processed foods, eat only fruit for dessert, and run five miles a day. Those are all great goals, but adding or taking away too many things and activities at the same time is overwhelming, and hard.

You need to start small. Focus on one small change that will support your goals, and master it. This book will help you understand the power that consistent, small changes can have on your life.

For example, the small habit I successfully incorporated was logging my food. The first two weeks were really hard, but I fought through because I was motivated to change. With time, logging and tracking my food became faster, easier, and less tedious. And so, even as my initial motivation faded, it had become a habit.  So, I continued to log my food. Now, I automatically log my food. It’s what I do.

In fact, now, when I choose to not log my food, it feels strange.

It’s a part of my everyday life. A part that has helped me more or less maintain my lowest weight for over a year now. Despite a shoulder injury, homeschooling, and trying to run my business, the habit of logging my food has helped keep me on track.

Instead of flipping your entire life upside down by changing everything at once, pick one small change and make it a habit. Then, build on it. Make another small change and create the habit. And so on and so forth.

My solid exercise routine, consistent meal prep, stress management, etc, have all been built, over time, upon my one, small but powerful, food logging habit. That is how real change happens. By slowly changing your habits. Which goal-supporting habit will you focus on this new year?

5. Fix Your Mindset

I can still remember the shame I felt every time I failed a weight loss attempt. It was so bad I stopped telling people my plans to start dieting. Each time I’d mention it, I’d get teased for my sordid dieting past, and all my various failures.

I’m sure you know people who cast their negativity on you. After a while the negativity and failure builds up so much it affects your entire mindset. You approach each new weight loss attempt with the seed of failure already planted. In order to achieve your weight loss goals in 2022, you MUST fix your mindset.

While this is the last pointer I will give you as you embark on the road to your own weight loss success, it is the most important. For years I approached weight loss with a doubting mind. I saw myself as an overweight girl who would never succeed at weight loss, no matter how hard I tried.

I’d failed every attempt, so why should this time be any different?

This kind of thinking is not helpful. You will never reach your goals if you don’t even have yourself in your corner.

Once I read this book, and tackled the hurdles in my own mind, the pounds I had been fighting with my whole life began melting away. I reached the lowest weight of my life, and I’m thrilled with the fact that I have finally reached my goals! If you are finally going to realize weight loss progress and success in 2022, you MUST believe in yourself.

Remind yourself of who you are, and what you are capable of, each morning. Tell yourself, “I am strong, and I am capable of achieving the change I want to see and feel.” Instead of labeling yourself as an overweight failure, visualize the best version of yourself, and make decisions from that viewpoint.

This will help you finally reach the goals you think are unattainable. Don’t let your mind hold you back! Instead, use it as the powerful tool it was designed to be.

So there ya have it!
